BISMARCK REVISITED

16th May 2005

Deep Ocean Expeditions is proud to announce the successful conclusion of the 2005 visit to the wreck of the German battleship 'Bismarck'. A total of 8 divers visited the 1941 wreck, once the pride of the wartime German Navy fleet now lying at a depth of 15,300ft (4670metres). Launching off the submersible support ship Akademik Keldysh, the submersibles MIR 1 and MIR 2 transported expeditioners from the USA, UK, Australia and Russia to the wreck which, battle damage aside, lies in excellent condition in the abyssal depths.

Having left the port of Kiel on the 31 st April, Keldysh passed through the Kiel Canal and then south through the English Channel to position at the dives site 350 miles south of Ireland. Expedition Leader, Belinda Sawyer, speaking from Cobh, Ireland at the conclusion of the voyage yesterday said that the ideal weather helped make the expedition a real success. "The 4 dives to the wreck proved a good shakedown for the MIR fleet after the complete overhaul and rebuild in 2004". At the conclusion of the voyage Keldysh is repositioning to St Johns, Newfoundland.
