19 July 2005 Akademik Keldysh is enroute to the wreck of the Titanic in final preparation for the television broadcast from the famous wreck on July 24. The Discovery Channel is funding the broadcast which is being coordinated by film director James Cameron and producer Andrew Wight. The project, entitled 'Last Mysteries of the Titanic' involves over 60 personal flown in from the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The St Johns, Newfoundland based vessel 'Sikuk' is being used as a support vessel to the Akademik Keldysh to extend the accommodation available on site. The broadcast involves many world 'firsts' and has produced a number of technical challenges for the film production company, the MIR submersible team and the marine support team said Deep Ocean Expeditions staff member Belinda Sawyer. "There's a real spirit of excitement and cooperation aboard, with engineers, equipment operators, television production staff, ships crew and support staff all working together to overcome the challenges. The quality of images for the sea floor, from within Titanic itself, are unsurpassed. It's going to be a fantastic broadcast". |
