Happy Birthday Keldysh!
January 22, 2006
We at Deep Ocean Expeditions offer our heartiest congratulations to the captain, crew and builders of the research ship
Keldysh turned 25 this week amid celebrations in her home port of Kaliningrad, Russia. Delivered to the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology in 1981 by her Finnish builders, Holming Oy, the ship has gone on to pursue an auspicious career in marine science.
Widely considered the flagship of the Russian academic fleet, Keldysh's conversion into the mothership for the twin Mir submersibles in 1987 transformed her into an icon of modern deep-sea exploration. Keldysh's achievements in deep-sea research are renowned, and her expeditions have formed the basis of hundreds of important scientific publications. Appearances in movies and documentaries have placed her before a global audience, and helped to bring the deep ocean to life for millions of people.
Again, we offer our congratulations to the Keldysh and everyone associated with her. It has been a privilege working with you, and we look forward to many more deep-sea adventures together.
