12 April 2006 Deep Ocean Expeditions is pleased to confirm plans for its forthcoming expeditions to the 'Ship of Dreams', the R.M.S. Titanic. Two expeditions are planned to revisit the wreck of the most famous ship in the world, which now lies 12,500 feet beneath the Atlantic at a site approximately 340 miles southeast of St Johns, Newfoundland. The expeditions will utilize the services of one of the worlds largest oceanographic vessels, the Akademik Keldysh, and her highly experienced crew. The RV Keldysh is the support ship for her twin resident Mir submersibles, each capable of reaching depths of 20,000 feet. Two expeditions are planned, each departing from the scenic historic port of St Johns. The expedition dates are; Expedition 1 (9th - 21 st August 2006) and Expedition 2 (20th to 1st September 2006). Expedition Coordinator, Belinda Sawyer said that it had been a real challenge to keep the expedition price down to $38,900 given that the price of marine fuels had risen 300% over the last two years. "Our expeditions are small and focused, with each of this year's voyages to the Titanic being limited to just 20 divers, so the absorption of rising fuel costs has been hard to accomodate. Given that we are running a 400 ft ship, a crew of 70, and two very technical submersibles, private adventurers are getting a unique experience that is well priced." Over half of this year's spaces had been sold before the expedition plans had been confirmed. There are no confirmed plans for 2007. |
