18 April 2006 Explorer, oceanographer and submersible expert Dr Don Walsh will be the senior lecturer and keynote speaker during the Operation Titanic 2006 expeditions. Dr Walsh achieved public recognition along with Jacques Piccard for their record-breaking dive to 35,800 feet in the Marianas Trench aboard the bathyscaphe 'Trieste' in 1960. The dive to the lowest point of the world's oceans has never been repeated. Dr Walsh will be aboard the research vessel Akademik Keldysh during her two planned expeditions to dive on the R.M.S Titanic scheduled for August 2006. Dr Walsh has enjoyed a successful career as a US Navy Captain and then a career as an oceanographer. He is currently a consultant on submersible design, construction and operation. Deep Ocean Expeditions consultant, Mike McDowell said, "it is always a pleasure to hear Don give a lecture. He has packed so much into his seagoing years that it would be hard to find a more definitive word. His relaxed and humorous styles mean that everybody on our expeditions gets to spend some quality time with Don. We're thrilled that he is able to come on this years expeditions". Now a resident of Oregon, Dr Walsh said today that it was always a pleasure to be aboard Keldysh. "She's a great ship; stable, comfortable and efficient. The ship's crew and submersible team are top notch and it's always a pleasure to watch a slick team in action. Deep submersible diving is still a very small and exclusive club; so everyone on these expeditions becomes part of something special." |
