15 May 2006 Deep Ocean Expeditions are pleased to announce the confirmed schedule for 'Expedition Solomon Sea', a dive safari to the legendry waters of Papua New Guinea. The scuba-diving expedition will comprise of two 15 day voyages scheduled to depart Lae on 15 th April 2007 and the return voyage from Walindi on 28th April 2007. Says Mike McDowell "We have always been keen to return to PNG since our last expedition there in 2003. The diving in PNG is incredible, and we have constantly been harangued by clients of the previous expedition to return here. We have put together an expedition that will build on our past experiences and allow us to explore another fantastic part of the tropics; the Solomon Sea." Voyage 1 will traverse the Solomon Sea, visit the Tufi Fiords, dive along the south Coast of New Britain, sail around 'volcano town' Rabaul which was largely destroyed by volcanic activity in the mid 90's. It will then visit reefs along the north coast of New Britain and several of the outlying islands before finishing with several dives in the waters of Kimbe Bay, recognized as internally significant sites of biodiversity. Voyage 2 will reverse this voyage track to finish in Lae. In addition to world class scuba diving, the voyages will also offer snorkeling opportunities, shore excursions, village visits and fishing opportunities. The expedition support vessel, the 73 meter research vessel Akademik Shokalskiy is a familiar 'home' to past clients who have dived from her in PNG, Vanuatu, French Polynesia and Indonesia. With 42 berths, she is large enough to offer space and comfort, but small enough so that expedition participants quickly become acquainted and bond into one big dive-orientated family. The vessel is equipped with a fleet of inflatable Zodiacs that allow fast and efficient deployment to a wealth of varied dive sites. According to Dive Coordinator Rob McCallum "we have been working with local dive guides to design a programme that offers a veritable smorgasbord of diving. Our plans include visits to walls, shallow reefs, bommies, muck dives and even some freshwater sites. There is something for everyone on this trip - all set in waters teeming with life. These will be really exciting sites as so few people ever dive them." Details of the expeditions can be found on the Deep Ocean Expeditions website or by contacting info@deepoceanexpeditions.com
