Papua New Guinea Dive Expeditions Additional Departures Announced

20 June 2006

The Expedition Leader for Expedition Solomon Sea announced today that the expedition, scheduled for April/May 2007 will be extended to cope with overwhelming demand. In making the announcement, Belinda Sawyer of Deep Ocean Expeditions said "this was always going to be a popular expedition; it is the destination that everyone has been requesting a return expedition too since we were here in 2003. Berths were scooped up in a matter of days so we have negotiated to keep the ship a little longer and now plan to run another two voyages, one departing Lae on 11 May and the final voyage departing Walindi on 24th May".

Expedition planning has involved input from Australian dive gurus Ron and Valerie Taylor, local dive operators from Tufi Dive Resort, the MV Star dancer and Walindi Plantation Resort as well as extensive research of local charts and pilot guides. Internationally renowned for its cultural and biological diversity, Papua New Guinea is regarded by dive connoisseurs as amongst the very best in the world. The expedition will retain the services of local dive masters, European chefs, New Zealand dive medicine specialists and support from shore based tourism operators to ensure that participants have every need taken care off - so that they can concentrate on the fun!

Dive coordinator Rob McCallum said  "the expedition plans to visit all of the best sites identified by local dive guides but we also have many sites that we would like to explore because so little is known about them and they look interesting on the chart. The dive masters will be working hard to make sure that we exploit every opportunity to make the most out of the tide, the wind and the weather. It's going to be a blast."

The Akademik Shokalskiy, a purpose built polar research vessel, will be equipped with 5 Zodiac inflatable boats, 3 dive compressors and over 70 scuba tanks for the duration of Expedition Solomon Sea.
