MEDITERRANEAN ANCIENT SHIPWRECKS
Itinerary
The itinerary described below delineates the general content of the schedule. A more detailed "day to day" itinerary is available as an insert to this brochure.
Day 1 (Saturday)
Arrive independently to Marseilles. Check in individually to our hotel in the port area. The remainder of the day will be free for rest or local sightseeing. In the evening attend a welcome cocktail and dinner, Expedition staff will brief you on the schedule for the upcoming week.
Day 2 (Sunday)
Wreck site dives using the REMORA 2000 submersible at the 1st Century A.D. wine carrier with its four to five thousand amphorae stacked on the sea floor. While part of the group dives, the remainder will enjoy a visit to the local archeological institute and the other sites of historic and archeological interest. Overnight at our Marseilles hotel. Evening lecture on an introduction to Marine archaeology. Dinner on your account at a restaurant of your choice.
Day 3 (Monday)
Further wreck site dives on the 1st Century A.D. wine carrier. Those who dived yesterday will reverse roles and head off to the local land attractions while the "non-divers" of yesterday will descend in REMORA 2000 to our historic wonders. Overnight in Marseilles. Dinner on your account.
Day 4 (Tuesday)
A day to rest from our diving pursuits to allow for maintenance and crew rest. Full day excursion in the company of our archeological experts to Nimes, Arles and St Remy with an emphasis on their excellent Roman ruins and artefacts. This day will be a foray into both historic and modern France. Lunch is included. Overnight in our Marseilles hotel. Dinner on your account.
Day 5 (Wednesday)
Early morning transportation to nearby Toulon. Board our support vessel CASTOR with the two Deep Rover submersibles. Wreck site dives on LA LUNE the 1660 French naval vessel whose cannons remain in place and aligned on the sea floor. Overnight in our Toulon hotel. Dinner on your account.
Day 6 (Thursday)
Join CASTOR and the Deep Rovers early morning. Wreck site dive on our 500 B.C. wreck and its amphorae. This is the expeditions' deepest dive (about 1,000ft). Overnight Toulon hotel.
Day 7 (Friday)
Early morning return to Marseilles.
Mid morning meeting with our experts at a selected Marseilles restaurant. Farewell lunch with our expedition group. Expedition arrangements finish after lunch.
